3D Tekken Movie: Blood Vengeance Announced

This week Namco Bandai held their press only event where they announced many new games and game tie-ins. Possibly one of the biggest news items announced at the show was a direct to dvd movie centered around the Tekken universe. Could this upcoming film be one of the few examples where a movie based off of a video game franchise turns out well?

“Tekken: Blood Vengeance” will be a full feature length title (meaning a 90 minute runtime) and will center on the events of Tekken 5 and 6. One of the details that got me excited is that the screenwriter Dai Sato, the writer behind the classic anime Cowboy Bebop, will be working on the project. The film is being directed by Youichi Mouri - the in-house director behind the cinematic featured in the Tekken Series.
I can't deny that I've spent a bit of time watching the CGI launch trailers for Tekken games in the past, but I didn't think they'd ever make it past the small screen. Turns out I was wrong - horribly wrong in fact, as Tekken: Blood Vengeance is set to burst onto our screens in "summer 2011". The movie is being created by Digital Frontier (the studio behind Resident Evil: Degeneration, Death Note and Appleseed) and scripted by Dai Sato (of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Cowboy Bebop). Directing it will be Youichi Mouri, who you may know from, well, directing previous Tekken CGI.Namco Bandai had a big day today, announcing release dates for a number of games and unveiling Soul Calibur V as well as Tekken: Blood Vengeance, a 3D CGI movie set in the Tekken universe.

We first heard about it via a tweet back in December, but Namco Bandai officially announced the existence of Soul Calibur V at its “Level Up” press conference in Dubai. The new game takes place 17 years after Soul Calibur IV, and stars Patroclus, the son of Sophitia, if you keep up with that sort of thing. Namco promises an improved battle system and new features, but stopped short of explaining how the battle system will be improved or what new features will be added. We expect to learn more at E3. The game will release in 2012.

"Over the past years that I've been working on Tekken, fans have been begging for a full CG Tekken movie. This movie is for those fans," says Tekken creator and head honcho Katsuhiro Harada. "Tekken has always been known for its colorful array of characters and background stories, and this movie is just one way of exploring that world from a new angle while bringing insight to the series."

The movie is said to be "3D compatible", which hopefully means there will be some places which actually aren't showing it in 3D so I can watch it without getting a headache. Actually, as long as Yoshimitsu gets at least 50% of the screen time, I'll be fine with it.
Are you excited for this direct to dvd movie? Considering the talent behind this effort it should come out well. The animation studio that produced the excellent Resident Evil: Degeneration is working on the animation/graphics. I will be watching this day one. Dai Sato’s work on Cowboy Bebop is some of the best in that medium. There is some serious talent behind Tekken: Blood Vengeance....
